Opening a set in 2008, Lola Okusami introduced the song “Burning Bridges” with a laugh-line. “I wrote this sitting at my computer at work and wondering ‘Why am I here?’” she said, smiling. As she started singing, her face went suddenly serious. And that voice — huge, deep, round, hinting at power beneath the surface — belted out the lyric “Can someone please tell me where I belong?… What would you say if you had this case study on your face?” You could feel her pain, you could feel a story lurking back there somewhere.
