On Tuesday November 4th, I wallflowered an Election Night party in Fort Greene to see how BK would usher in the age of Obama under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. I arrived just past 7 PM, made my way down into a basement apartment on Clinton Street, and settled in for a night of intense emotions.

Last week saw two videos climb the YouTube charts by dance-pop acts Lady GaGa and Hillary Duff. Beautiful, Dirty, Rich by Lady GaGa is a video of a writhing girl in an empty mansion celebrating the liberty to indulge. Reach Out by Hilary Duff is also a video of a writhing girl in an empty mansion celebrating the liberty to indulge. Each video stars a blonde white girl; each video accentuates the sexuality of a woman’s mouth; each video features intimate moments between a young girl and a statue. Two highly stylized videos by two nearly global artists released in the same week with such clear content overlap? What follows: a head to head analysis of the two vids, their directors and a verdict on who calls dibs in this Blonde on Blonde ‘hodown.

There is a station marked ID Check. We stand in a short line to receive our bracelets to gain admission to the 21 and up beer garden. In the background the lead singer of the British rock group Your Vegas yells something like, “We hear you only get 5 beers out there. Make ’em last! You got to pace yourselves!” Turns out he’s right. We find out we’re only allowed 5 beers for the whole day and that we can only drink them within the confines of the beer garden. No stage is visible from any one of the beer gardens. Drink beer or watch live music is the decision we have to make as 25-year-olds who paid $100+ dollars to attend an outdoor music festival. I’m beginning to think All Points West isn’t going to be as much about liberty as I initially imagined.
