What would we do at 3 oclock without a vending machine for our afternoon pick-me-up? They’ve infiltrated our lives but the most adventurous thing I’ve ever bought from one is a new flavor of soda. But around the world, you’re just as likely to see fish food or umbrella vending machines. Vending Machines: Coined Consumerism is full of the wackiest vending machines from around the world and includes interviews with market research companies and store owners. Five jaw-dropping vending machines have made this list and oddly enough, some of these would make my life easier.
1. Japan: Pet Roach Crane Machines

Pet Roach Crane Machine
Some kids want dogs or cats for pets and then there are those who want roaches — at least that’s what the genius who invented the Pet Roach Machine thought. For ¥200, you too can own a pet roach!
2. Japan: Mount Fuji

Mt. Fuji Vending Machine
This vending machine is of normal shape and size and sells ordinary Japanese drinks. It’s just located 3,776 meters at the very top of Mount Fuji. I wonder what the climbers think – great, I needed a drink or what is this doing here?
3. Scotland: Hair Straightener

Hair Straightener Vending Machine
For people with curly hair in Scotland, this may be a godsend. You pay to use the hair straightener right at the machine and plug it back in when you’re done.
5. Italy: Pizza & Pasta

Pizza & Pasta Vending Machine
Of course the country famous for its pizza and pasta would have a vending machine for it. It’s not pre-made junk though – it actually makes pies from scratch.
5. Great Britain: Umbrellas

Umbrella Vending Machine
In one of the rainiest countries in the world, the umbrella vending machine has to be doing well. I almost wish there was one in New York City…
