Beijing’s Madi Ju doesn’t take pictures of China like you’ve seen. She doesn’t photograph smoky factories or ironic misspellings. She has no interest in huge architectural photographs of communist housing blocks. She doesn’t care either way for the rock scene, or the University scene, or the lives of the working poor. Instead, she just photographs life as she sees it: the giddy energy of her friends, jumping all over her bed in their underwear; the strange beauty of a cow sleeping by an apartment complex. Perhaps the Ryan McGinley of China, Madi Ju’s images have a breezy, sexy quality — an absence of motive, of subterfuge, a kind of crazy raw energy. Best known so far for her  My Little Dead Dick series of images from 2006 – 08, she’s just released a 68-page photo book of her work from 2005 to 2008. A DIY book, there are only 500 copies, and each comes with a signed 7 inch postcard of the giraffe photo we’ve included below. To buy a copy,  you’ve got to contact Madi at: after17magazine@gmail.com. (It’s $18 dollars plus shipping.)
