New Jersey based hip-hop artist Johnnyphlo has been keeping himself real busy, releasing both his latest MV for ‘Just a Friend’ through AllKPop, and a behind the scenes interview with Seoulbeats on the same day. For those of you unfamiliar with Johnnyphlo, he is a Korean-American MC who chooses to express himself as naturally as possible; and in his case that’s primarily through the Korean language. With so many “artists” out there that compromise their image and representation to fit a marketable mold, it’s refreshing to find musicians who aren’t afraid to simply be themselves, even if it means doing it a foreign language.
The production values for this video are pretty sick, props to Visionlab as they keep outdoing themselves. Parts of the video remind me of the m-flo/Bonnie Pink collaboration ‘Love Song’. The record is a very light, fun track, perfectly fit for the summer time. It’s a welcome contrast to Johnnyphlo’s previous release ‘One of the Best‘, as it shows his versatility as an artist.
The behind the scenes interview w/ Seoulbeats is just about as entertaining as the music video, so you should definitely check it out too.
Not everyone may be able to understand the lyrics, but most will be understand good music. That’s wassup!
PS: The eagle eyed viewer may spot Asian American artists Decipher and Ailee making cameos.
